A new step has just been taken to a fair food system in Tunisia with the inauguration, Thursday, May 22, 2025, from the first market of the farmer to the headquarters of the Tunisian Union of Agriculture and Fisheries (UTAP), in Tunis.
Placed under the slogan “from hand in hand”, this pilot market, which will be held every Saturday, brought together at the Cité El Khadhra, 30 exhibitors from Greater Tunis, as well as participants from Egypt and Lebanon.
This experimental project is part of a new strategy aimed at establishing a national network of “Tunisian Farmers Markets” through all regions of the country. Its ambition is to rehabilitate agricultural distribution circuits by promoting the direct sale of the producer to the consumer.
The objective: to offer fair prices to farmers and healthy, quality and affordable products to consumers.
This market benefits from the technical support of the World Farmers Market Coalition (WorldFMC), an international organization based in Italy, which militates for a sustainable food system without intermediaries, where producers can live with dignity from their work.
Hamadi Habaieb, Secretary of State for Hydraulic Resources, praised this initiative, stressing that it will reduce the distance between producers and consumers. He announced that this market will be organized every Saturday at UTAP headquarters.
Moez Ben Zaghdan, president of UTAP, insisted on the need to strengthen prices transparency, allowing the citizen to know the prices practiced directly on the farm.
