92 % of agricultural workers without social coverage

The question of social coverage of agricultural workers has recently been highlighted in the assembly of representatives of the people. According to Basma Hammami, a member of the General Legislation Commission, 92 % of women working in the agricultural sector in Tunisia do not benefit from any social security coverage.

During her intervention this Friday, April 4, 2024, she highlighted the precarious conditions that these women face, stressing that they constitute the most vulnerable and deplete category of the active population.

Basma Hammami stressed that agricultural workers are often victims of economic violence and have long been marginalized. The presidential decree n ° 04 of 2024, which she described as crucial, was introduced to remedy this situation by offering them well -deserved social and economic rights.

This decree aims in particular to grant agricultural workers, as well as their families, adequate health coverage, while guaranteeing them rights such as maternity leave and old age pensions. These measures strengthen the economic integration of these women, who represent a significant part of the workforce in the agricultural sector, but whose work often remains invisible.

The legislator also stressed the importance of a strict implementation of this decree by the administration. It insisted on the need to encourage the creation of local or regional companies to strengthen the agricultural sector. Indeed, according to Hammami, the decree on the creation of agricultural community companies constitutes additional support for workers, offering them new opportunities for entrepreneurship and local development.
