455 dead and more than 2,650 injured in 2025

As Eid Al-Adha approaches, a period traditionally marked by a dense road traffic, the Tunisian Road Safety Association sounds alarm.

Its president, Bilel Ounifi revealed Thursday, June 5, 2025 that no less than 2020 road accidents have been recorded since the start of the year, killing 455 people and more than 2,650. Figures which he described as “tragic” during his visit to the waves of the national radio.

Tunisia is unfortunately not to its first alert in road safety. Each year, hundreds of lives are broke on the country’s roads, in a context where the indiscipline of drivers, the poor state of certain roads, and the absence of rigorous control aggravates the situation.

According to official statistics, the country records an average of more than 1,000 dead per year in traffic accidents, a figure much higher than the world average in proportion to the population.

Faced with this worrying situation, the Tunisian Road Safety Association has launched a national awareness campaign, called “your life is more important”. Deployed in motorway toll stations and in large urban crossroads, this initiative aims to recall the basic rules often overlooked by motorists: respecting speed limitations, carrying its seat belt, avoiding the use of the driving, not driving in a state of fatigue or under the effect of substances, and for two-wheeler drivers, carry a helmet.
