While the coronavirus continues its worrying spread in the four corners of the world, its vairants further complicates the situation.
WHO Director General, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, has described as “disturbing news” the fact that the vaccines developed so far could be less effective against the variant detected for the first time in South Africa.
“This is clearly concern about news,” the OMS director general said on Monday, February 8, at a virtual press conference from Geneva.
The WHO has called, in this sense, manufacturers to adapt to the evolution of the virus, taking into account the latest variants for future vaccines, including recall vaccines. “This is what happens with antigrippal vaccines, which are updated twice a year to correspond to the dominant strains,” said Tedros.
“We must also continue to design and carry out new tests, and we must closely monitor the impact of vaccines on epidemiology, serious illnesses and mortality in order to be able to use vaccines with maximum efficiency,” insisted Dr. Tedros, quoted by the official UN website.
