The candidacy of Algeria to membership in the BRICS was categorically rejected. Our neighbor in the West is not one of the five nations chosen to soon integrate this Sélect group.
Algeria has missed a good opportunity to join the BRICS, the prestigious economic alliance that makes emerging countries dream.
A blow for the Tebboune regime which has not spared its efforts to integrate the first world economic force.
The reasons for rejection would be multiple, but the one that counted the most in this decision is the fact that Algeria displays a GDP per capita considered too low, estimated at 3500 dollars. Unlike Argentina, for example, which has per capita GDP exceeding $ 10,000, which places it clearly forward.
The dependence of the Algerian economy with hydrocarbons, considered as a risk too high for membership of the BRICS, and the absence of economic and strategic reforms aimed at meeting the challenges of the 21st century weighed in the balance.
The question that must be asked: can the rejection of the candidacy of Algeria dissuade the Tunisians as to formulate a request for membership in this alliance? It must, first of all, should be noted that our country did not officially apply for the membership of the BRICS.
Everything that has been said and written about this can only be a way for Tunisia to take the pulse. Awaiting a IMF loan agreement, which is still slow to materialize, our country will not have a bad eye a membership in a group of nations, considered the most powerful in terms of GDP in the world.
This would also put additional pressure on a West which would certainly not want to lose a country (Tunisia), considered as a historic “ally” in the region.
South Africa is preparing to welcome the next BRICS summit, where five selected countries (Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Indonesia, Egypt and Argentina) which have been able to meet the rigorous criteria set by the BRICS, will be officially announced, as members of this alliance.
