Thursday, September 18, 2025, the United States vetoed a UN Security Council resolution project requiring an immediate and permanent cease-fire in the Gaza Strip, as well as the lifting of Israeli restrictions on humanitarian aid. The text, supported by 14 of the 15 members of the Council, also provided for the release of the hostages retained by Hamas.
Almost unanimous support, blocked by Washington
The project, written by the ten non -permanent members of the Council, obtained a large consensus, with 14 favorable votes. But the American veto was enough to block its adoption. This is the sixth time that Washington has used this right since the conflict in Gaza, almost two years ago to protect its Israeli ally.
A humanitarian emergency denounced
Before the vote, several ambassadors sounded the alarm. Denmark ambassador Christina Markus Lassen recalled that “famine was confirmed in Gaza”, denouncing a “catastrophic” situation aggravated by the intensification of the Israeli military offensive in the city of Gaza.
