The UN Security Council rejected, this Friday, August 14, 2020, an American resolution aimed at extending the embargo on arms sales to Iran which expires next October.
The American project was only approved by the United States and the Dominican Republic while Russia and China voted against. The remaining eleven members of the Council which Tunisia abstained when it took nine votes for the resolution to be voted.
This rejection sparked the United States who denounced an “inexcusable” vote. According to the head of American diplomacy Mike Pompeo, the UN “has failed today to fulfill his fundamental mission”, namely “maintaining international peace and security”.
This arms embargo in Iran is 13 years old.
