The foreign ministers of Tunisia, Algeria and Egypt held a new meeting on Thursday in Algiers within the framework of the mechanism of Libya’s neighboring countries, reaffirming their opposition to any foreign interference in Libyan affairs and their support for a political settlement led exclusively by the Libyans themselves.
The joint communiqué, adopted following the meeting between Mohamed Ali Nafti, Ahmed Attaf and Badr Abdel Aati, insists on the need to withdraw all mercenaries and foreign fighters from Libyan territory. The three heads of diplomacy stressed that priority must be given to the unification of political and military institutions and the organization of presidential and legislative elections as soon as possible.
According to the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the meeting allowed in-depth consultations on the evolution of the situation in Libya and on the means of relaunching the political process under the aegis of the United Nations.
The three countries recalled that neighboring states are the first to be affected by the repercussions of the Libyan conflict, hence their commitment to working for a lasting and concerted solution.
The ministers also welcomed Algeria’s active role in the UN Security Council, notably its initiatives aimed at drawing attention to the responsibility of the international community in preserving the resources and financial assets of the Libyan people.
