Trump threatens Canada: “No business if you recognize Palestine”

The Canadian Prime Minister announced his intention to recognize a Palestinian state in September at the UN. Donald Trump immediately reacted by brandishing an economic threat.

At a press conference held on Wednesday, July 30, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said his country was officially recognizing the state of Palestine during the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly, scheduled for September 2025 in New York.

Relaunch the solution to two states

This decision aligns Ottawa in the recent position of France and the United Kingdom, which also expressed their desire to support the creation of a Palestinian State to relaunch the solution to two states.

The Canadian declaration was welcomed by the Palestinian authority and France, but immediately sparked the anger of US President Donald Trump. On Truth Social, Trump posted: “Wow! Canada has just announced that it supports a Palestinian state. It will become very difficult for us to conclude a trade agreement with them. O Canada !!! »»

An outing interpreted as barely veiled commercial blackmail, in a context of growing diplomatic tension around the Palestinian question.

Decades of unconditional support in Israel

The Palestine recognition movement is gaining momentum on the international scene, especially in Europe. For Ottawa, this change marks a break with decades of unconditional support in Israel.

The decision comes as violence in the occupied territories are continuing and calls for lasting peace are multiplying.
