Violent clashes broke out in the western suburbs of the Libyan Tripoli capital. “The clashes between armed groups have broken out and still continue the area between the cities of Sayyad and Janzour,” said a source from the Libyan Ministry of the Interior.

Located in the western suburbs of Tripoli, Janzour is home to the headquarters of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (Manul) but also kept residential complexes, reserved for staff of foreign diplomatic missions.

These clashes intervene after the Libyan government of Fathi Bachagha, appointed by Parliament and supported by Marshal Haftar announced this Tuesday, May 17, 2022, withdraw from Tripoli, a few hours after entering.

The press service of this government said in a statement that its Prime Minister Fathi Bachagha, as well as several of his ministers, had “left Tripoli to preserve the security (…) of citizens”, after clashes between armed groups broke out at dawn in the city, reports the AFP agency.

Earlier in the day, this same press service announced “the arrival of the Prime Minister of the Libyan government, Fathi Bachagha, accompanied by several ministers, in the capital Tripoli, to start his work there”.

The Tunisian Consulate in Tripoli urged Tunisians to avoid any necessary displacement and to be vigilant.
