A Russian army general was killed this Monday morning in a targeted explosion under his car in the southern sector of Moscow, announced the Russian Investigative Committee, which opened an investigation for “murder”.

According to authorities, the explosion occurred around 6:55 a.m. (local time) as Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov, head of the Operational Readiness Directorate of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, was getting into his personal vehicle.

The explosive device was allegedly placed under the chassis of the car, causing a powerful detonation which seriously damaged the vehicle and caused the general’s death on the spot.

Images released by Russian intelligence services show the crime scene, with damaged cars and investigators on site. Law enforcement secured the perimeter and began collecting evidence to determine the exact circumstances of the attack.

Possible involvement of Ukrainian intelligence services

The Investigative Committee indicated that one of the avenues explored is the possible involvement of the Ukrainian intelligence services, without providing official confirmation at this stage. Ukrainian authorities have not yet issued a comment on the incident.

The death of Fanil Sarvarov comes amid ongoing tensions linked to the conflict in Ukraine, marked by previous attacks against Russian officials inside the territory of the Russian Federation.

This event should have repercussions on the political and security climate between Moscow and Kyiv in the coming days.
