The Security Council calls, for the first time to humanitarian breaks

Six weeks after the start of the conflict, the UN executive body voted for “humanitarian breaks and corridors” in Gaza, but without specifying the duration.

He had so far failed to agree on a resolution. A month and a half after the start of the war, the UN Security Council finally called, this Wednesday, November 15, in the evening, to “humanitarian breaks and corridors” of a few days in the Gaza Strip.

This text which collected 12 votes for and 3 abstentions (United States, United Kingdom, Russia) is the first resolution adopted by the Council since the end of 2016 on the Israeli-Palestinian file which divides the UN body.

The resolution, prepared by Malta, calls for “extended and urgent humanitarian breaks and corridors for a number of sufficient days” to provide help to civilians.

The Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs demanded an “unequivocal conviction of Hamas”, while ensuring that there would be “no room for prolonged humanitarian breaks” as long as the hostages are not released.
