Salwan Momika, Iraqi refugee known for burning several copies of the Koran, was killed by Stockholm, this Thursday, January 30, 2025.
Police arrested five people in connection with the murder, while a court, who was to render his judgment on the accusations of incentive to the ethnic hatred against him, postponed his decision on February 3 due to his death.
Momika, 38 years old and Christian, had been involved in Koran autodafés in 2023, which had sparked violent demonstrations in several Muslim countries.
His acts of provocation, of which deals in Stockholm, had exacerbated tensions between Sweden and certain countries of the Middle East, notably after attacks against the Swedish Embassy in Baghdad.
Due to these events, Sweden had raised its level of threat in 2023. The Swedish government expressed its condemnation of profanations while defending freedom of expression, specifying that such acts could now be considered as an “agitation against an ethnic group”.
