The judge president of the highest court of the United Nations rendered this Friday, January 26, 2024 her decision on urgent measures claimed against Israel by South Africa which accuses him of “genocide” in Gaza.

The International Court of Justice (CIJ), which sits in The Hague (Netherlands), called for Israel to take all possible measures to avoid forms of genocide in Gaza. The Court also determined that it cannot access Israel’s request to classify the complaint.

“The International Court of Justice (CIJ) declares that Israel must” take all measures in its power “to prevent acts covered by the Convention on Genocide in the Gaza Strip,” it was announced.

During her hearing on the accusations of South Africa targeting Israel, the International Court of Justice said that she had a good jurisdiction to rule on this file.

According to the president of the International Court of Justice, “at least certain acts (in Gaza) seem likely to fall under the convention on genocide”. However, at this stage, the court is not required to decide whether Israel has violated the convention against the genocide.

As a reminder, Pretoria accuses Israel of carrying out “genocidal acts” in the Gaza Strip, since the start of its operations in response to terrorist attacks on October 7 in the Hebrew State.
