The European Union has launched an ambitious plan to rearm Europe. Presented by Ursula von der Leyen, the president of the European Commission, this program intends to mobilize nearly 800 billion euros for the defense of the continent and offer immediate military support to Ukraine.
Entitled Rearmer Europe, this plan provides for massive weapons expenses, including 150 billion in the form of loans for the 27 Member States. “It is time for Europe to strengthen,” said Ursula von der Leyen, stressing the importance of the initiative to ensure a safer and resilient Europe in the face of current threats.
In addition to this military support in Ukraine, the president of the European Commission proposed a relaxation of the EU budgetary rules. This measure would allow the Member States to increase their investments in defense without risking triggering the excessive deficit procedure. “States will be able to strengthen their military spending significantly, in complete freedom,” she added.
This plan marks a strategic turning point for the EU, determined to take charge of its security and intensify its support for Ukraine in the war against Russia.
