The number of victims continues to climb in Türkiye and Syria with more than 6,200 dead and 25,000 injured after the two earthquakes, one of a magnitude 7.8 and the other 7.5, having struck these two countries.

Human losses are considerable, also the physical damage, many buildings having collapsed because of tremors, in Türkiye as in Syria. In Türkiye, the authorities have counted nearly 5,000 buildings destroyed.

The tremors of the 7.8 magnitude earthquake that struck southern Turkey and Syria were also felt to Greenland, and according to an Italian expert, the Anatolian plate has moved at least three meters.

The president of the National Institute of Geophysics and Italian volcanology, Carlo Doglioni delivered his explanations in the Italian newspaper “Corriere della will be”, believing that the tremors moved Turkey three meters.

“What we call the Arabic plate has moved about 3 meters in a northeast-south-west direction compared to the Anatolian plate. We are talking about a structure in the border area between this world, that of the Arabic plate, and that of the Anatolian plate, “he explained.

“According to the estimates we have, we know that the flaw was activated over at least 150 kilometers with a trip of more than three meters. Everything happened in a few tens of seconds, ”he added.

Carlo Doglioni stresses that this area is “very active and one of the most dangerous in the Mediterranean. Very serious earthquakes occurred there over the past centuries ”.

“The fault plan is very tilted and we observe a horizontal movement on both sides of the flaw during the event,” he said.
