The 100 most influential personalities of the year 2023 according to Time Magazine
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The American magazine Time has released its list of 100 most influential personalities in the world of the year 2023. The selection criteria are function, weight on global events or even influence with the population.

Since 1998, Time magazine has established this list, each year, in order to mark the major trends in the present world and that to come. It is also, sometimes, a kind of tributes with several almost historical figures, for their past actions and their lasting influence.

There is no particular order in the rankings, but different categories, which change from year to year, are defined. In 2023, personalities were classified into six categories: artists, icons, pioneers, leaders, titans and innovators.

Politicians are generally those returning from a year to the following year: Xi Jinping is the record with 13 quotes in Time 100, ahead of Barack Obama, Oprah Winfrey or Hillary Clinton.

This year, many familiar names, the favorite star of Bollywood or the model who actively defends human rights to the Pakistani Minister of Climate Change.

Shah Rukh Khan, the Bollywood superstar, is obviously on this list, in the “icones” category. It was practically obvious, since he had been at the top of the survey carried out with Time readers. In addition, this ranking is deserved, because of its long career in the film industry and the enormous success of his film Pathaanreleased on January 25, 2023, which has reported more than $ 130 million to date.

The Indian director SS Rajamouli entered this list, in the “pioneers” category. His latest film RRR won the Oscar 2023 for the best film song.

Iranian journalists Niloofar Hamedi and Elaheh Mohammadi were included in the Time list for their coverage of the Mahsa Amini affair, the young woman who died after being mistreated in police custody for not having properly covered her hair. The two reporters were arrested and are still detained in Evin prison, accused of conspiracy with foreign intelligence agencies to undermine Iran’s national security. Despite their courage and professionalism, their fate testifies to the growing media repression in Iran.

It should be noted that the second place in the sounding of the Time readers had been attributed to Iranian women who protested for greater freedoms against the Islamic regime of the country.

The list of this year 2023 reserves an important place for writers, with for example Salman Rushdie, honored for his resilience in the face of terrorism and the intimidation of fundamentalists and authors like Neil Gaiman, Judy Blume and Colleen Hoover. The Tracé D. Hall librarian is also recognized in the “Icons” section for its professionalism and its career in cultural development and animation. As the General Manager of the American Library Association, Hall fought against attempted censorship in American libraries, which aim to restrict access to books evoking experiences of racialized people or LGBTQIA+communities, or themes related to sexual, racist or homophobic violence.

The Time 100 2023 list has several athletes. Lionel Messi, winner of the 2023 World Cup, and the American football player Patrick Mahomes, winner of the 2023 Superbowl, appear in the “Titans” category. Wnba Brittney Griner basketball player,, Long imprisoned in Russia for “possession of narcotics”, and Mikaela Shiffrin, who recently dropped the record for the number of victories in the World Cup (men and women combined), appear among the “icons”. The Polish IGA Swiatek, world number 1 of the professional female tennis circuit (WTA) and Kylian Mbappé, are classified among “innovators”. Kylian, the only Frenchman on the list, is highlighted for his “respect”, his “humility” and his “lucidity” which “allow him to keep his feet on the ground”. “He has a realistic vision of celebrity,” adds the weekly, who describes him as “football genius”.

The Yusra and Sara Mardini competition sisters who fled the Syrian conflict in 2015 are also on the list. The swimmers (The Swimmers), A 2022 film inspired by the powerful history of the sisters, presented to a large audience the human reality of what it means to be moved.

The Time 100 of 2023 includes 16 climate leaders, a record number for the list, including Anthony Albanese, Gustavo Petr, Catherine Coleman Flowers, Elizabeth Maruma Mrema, Robin Zeng and many others.

We notice that men/women parity is perfect (is it wanted or a coincidence?). Indeed, fifty women on this list, which includes Jennifer Coolidge, Beyoncé, Laurene Powell Jobs, Karen Lynch, Kate Orff, Colleen Hoover, Brittney Griner, Oleksandra Matviichuk, Cindy McCain, Sarah Kate Ellis, Doja Cat, Lea Michele, Angela Bassett, Bella Hadid and others.

Joe Biden is on the list for the 6th time, more than any other person this year. The other ghosts include Elon Musk (5), Janet Yellen (4), Lionel Messi (3), Beyoncé (3), Luiz Inácio Lula Da Silva (3) and Mitch McConnell (3).

Polish tennis player Iga Swiatek, 21, is the youngest on this year’s list and the oldest person is the American writer Judy Blume, who is 85 years old.

It goes without saying that there is unfortunately no Tunisian or Tunisian in this list.
