Talks on the next elections are completed without a final agreement

Participants in the Libyan political dialogue forum agreed yesterday, Sunday, November 15, 2020, on the organization of national elections on December 24, 2021, announced the acting emissary of the United Nations, Stéphanie Williams.

However, this Monday, November 16, she deplored the suspension of talks on the next elections in Libya without any government being appointed to supervise these elections and without any agreement about them.

“The discussions on the future of Libya have been postponed without appointing a new government which will supervise the transition to possible elections in December 2021,” said Stephanie Williams, adding “that there was still a lot of work to do”.

“Participants in the Libyan political dialogue forum agreed on the organization of national elections on December 24, 2021,” she said, recalling that the 75 delegates gathered in Tunis were responsible for agreeing on the organization of elections but also on a unified executive.

But the talks ended without any agreement on a unified executive, which, according to Stephanie Williams, was necessary to set up these elections.

A few days ago, these delegates found an agreement in principle on a roadmap supposed to lead to “free, fair, inclusive and credible legislative elections” with stages allowing the Libyan institutions to be united, she said.
