Due to the deterioration of the military-political situation in Syria, the Russian Embassy in Damascus made an appealing Russian nationals present in the country to consider departure via still available commercial flights.
In an official press release, the embassy specifies that the possibility of leaving Syrian territory remains accessible thanks to active airports.
“Faced with the complex situation in Syria, we remind our citizens the opportunity to return to Russia by borrowing commercial air links. The embassy and its consular services continue their normal activities and ensure their usual support, ”said the declaration.
Despite the continuity of consular operations, the rise in tensions, exacerbated by the intensification of armed confrontations, especially in the north of the country, is a growing threat to security.
Observers believe that this recommendation aims to anticipate the complications linked to a possible climbing of the conflict, allowing citizens to take preventive measures before an evacuation becomes more difficult.
Currently, Syria is experiencing a major intensification of hostilities, particularly in the north of the country. The rebel groups, led by Hayat Tahrir al-Cham, launched an important offensive, taking up strategic territories, especially around Hama, and threatening the key city of Homs.
This jeopardizes the vital connections of the Syrian regime, especially between Damascus and coastal bastions. In response, Iran and Hezbollah plan to increase their military support, while Russia, ally of Assad, calls on its citizens to leave the country for increased security reasons.
