The PJD Islamist Party was largely beaten by the liberal parties considered to be close to the Royal Palace during the legislative elections, which held yesterday, Wednesday in Morocco.
Indeed, the Islamists, in power for over 10 years, underwent a spectacular rout during these elections going from 125 seats in the outgoing assembly to only 12.
Far behind their main rivals, the National Rally of Independents (RNI), the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM), both of liberal trend, and the Istiqlal party (center-right), with 97, 82 and 78 (out of 395 deputies).
Moroccan media explains that the extent of the defeat of Islamists is unexpected insofar as, despite the absence of surveys, analysts thought that the PJD would still play the first places.
The PJD Islamists have been the first party in Parliament since 2011. The political system is nevertheless still dominated by the royal institution.
