Spain, Ireland and Norway officially recognize the Palestinian state

Madrid, Dublin and Oslo formally recognize the state of Palestine, this Tuesday, May 28, 2024. This decision was described as “question of historical justice” by the Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez.

Announced last Wednesday in a coordinated manner by Mr. Sánchez and his Irish and Norwegian counterparts, the recognition of the State of Palestine is effective from today.

The recognition of the State of Palestine is “a necessity” to “achieve peace” between Israelis and Palestinians, in addition to being “a question of historical justice” for the Palestinian people, said Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez on Tuesday.

The Spanish government adopted on Tuesday, during a Council of Ministers, a decree officially recognizing the state of Palestine, announced the spokesperson for the government of Pedro Sánchez.

The Irish government was also to meet in the morning to endorse it, while Norway has given a verbal note on Sunday to the new Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammed Mustafa, acting in the entry into force of this decision.

These three European countries – including two, Spain and Ireland are members of the EU – believe that their initiative has a very strong symbolic significance, capable of bringing other states to join them.

They highlight the role played by Norway and Spain in the 1990s’ peace process in the Middle East. Madrid had, in fact, welcomed an Israeli-Arab peace conference in 1991, two years before the 1993 Oslo agreements.
