Arrived in Algiers last night, the head of Russian diplomacy, Sergei Lavrov, began today, Tuesday, May 10, 2022, a visit to Algeria.
Lavrov must speak with his Algerian counterpart, Ramtane Lamamra, and be received by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.
This visit, the first of Lavrov in Algeria since January 2019, coincides with the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Russia and Algeria.
Algeria is a key ally of Moscow and one of the largest gas exporters, it is currently increasingly requested by Europe which seeks to reduce its dependence on Russian gas.
Algeria provides around 11% of Europe’s gas needs, compared to 47% for Russia.
Algeria claims that its additional export capacities to Europe are too limited to replace Russian gas.
It should be recalled that, according to Echaab News, newspaper of the UGTT, the head of Russian diplomacy Sergei Lavrov should make a working visit to Tunisia and that the Russian ambassador to Tunisia will have to organize, according to the UGTT which cites diplomatic sources a meeting between the secretary general of the unions Noureddine Taboubi and Sergei Lavrov.
