The 2025 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded this Friday, October 10 to María Corina Machado, emblematic figure of the Venezuelan opposition. This distinction recognizes his unwavering commitment to democracy and human rights in the context of increasing repression under the regime of Nicolás Maduro.
María Corina Machado, former lawmaker and founder of the election monitoring organization Súmate, was honored for her determined fight for the democratic rights of the Venezuelan people and her quest for a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy. Since the contested re-election of Nicolás Maduro in July 2024, she has lived in hiding, continuing to mobilize civil society and denounce human rights violations.
Donald Trump: a controversial candidacy
At the same time, American President Donald Trump publicly expressed his desire to obtain the Nobel Peace Prize, presenting himself as a “peacemaker” on the international scene. He notably highlighted his efforts to achieve a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, as well as his diplomatic initiatives in Ukraine and Armenia. However, these actions took place after the nomination deadline of January 31, 2025, thus excluding his candidacy for this year.
Some observers say Trump’s Nobel media campaign may have hurt his chances, as the Nobel committee is traditionally reluctant to award awards to people who actively seek the distinction.
