A collision between three trains left nearly 300 dead and 850 injured Friday evening June 2 in eastern India, near Balasore, about 200 kilometers from Bhubaneswar, the capital of the State of Odisha.
It is one of the deadliest rail disasters in India. Since yesterday evening, help has grown to extricate the many travelers trapped under the metal carcasses of the wagons.
According to AFP, the balance sheet has reached at least 288 people dead and around 850 people were hospitalized.
According to Amitabh Sharma, the Director of Indian railways, two trains of travelers were “actively involved in the accident”. A third train, a convoy of goods, parked on the site where the tragedy occurred, reports AFP.
The deadliest railway accident in this country is that of June 6, 1981 when, in the state of Bihar (east), seven wagons of a train crossing a bridge, fell into a river, the bagmati, killing 800 and 1000 dead.
