Negotiations for a ceasefire in Ukraine where the war continues, resumed, this Wednesday, March 16, between the two Ukrainian and Russian belligerents.
Russia has proposed a compromise which was rejected by Ukraine. Indeed, Moscow proposed a “neutral status” for Ukraine such as Sweden or Austria. But kyiv rejected the idea of Neutrality in the Swedish or the Austrian.
To justify his refusal, Ukraine says he wants his security to Russia to be guaranteed by foreign powers in the event of assault.
In other words, kyiv hopes that countries signatory guarantees will not remain away in the event of an attack on Ukraine, but that they will take an active part in the conflict alongside Ukraine, which would not be the case with the neutral status wanted by Russia.
The neutral status of Ukraine especially implies that it renounces to join NATO. However on Tuesday the Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky said that it was necessary to “recognize” that his country would never join the Atlantic Alliance.
