While relations between the two countries are always tense due to the Polisario file, King Mohammed VI wished a “return to normal” with Algeria, during the traditional speech marking the anniversary of his accession to the throne.
In an address at the Radio-Télévised Nation, the Cherifian monarch also defended the “reopening of the borders between two neighboring countries and two brothers peoples”.
“We reassure our brothers in Algeria, their direction and their people that they will never have to fear maliciousness on the part of Morocco,” said Mohammed VI.
“We also confirm all the price that we attach to affection and friendship, exchanges and interactions between our two peoples,” he insisted. The Moroccan sovereign, however, calls for rapprochement between the two neighboring countries each year, calls ignored by Algeria.
Recall that the borders have been closed since 1994 while Algeria has broken its diplomatic links with Morocco in August 2021, accusing Rabat of “hostile acts”.
