A group of higher officers from the Gabonese army announced this Wednesday, August 30, 2023, on television having taken power due to the lack of credibility of the recent general elections, shortly after the announcement of Ali Bongo’s victory in the presidential election.

The officers said they represent all the security and defense forces in Gabon.

“On behalf of the Gabonese people, and guarantor of the protection of institutions, we decided to defend peace by putting an end to the regime in place. To this end, the general elections of August 26, 2023, as well as the truncated results are canceled, the borders are closed until further notice. All the institutions of the Republic are dissolved, ”said the officers.

A little earlier, the president of the Gabonese Elections Center (CGE) announced that Ali Bongo had won a third term in the presidential election with 64.27% of the vote.

Ali Bongo has already completed two mandates to the presidency of the oil producing country since he succeeded his father Omar Bongo, who died in 2009 after reigned since 1967.
