The COP24Med of the Barcelona Convention was held from December 2 to 5 in Cairo, a few kilometers from a Mediterranean increasingly impacted by plastic pollution every day.

The assembled deputies decided (as parliamentarians who are members of the Interparliamentary Coalition to End Plastic Pollution) to co-sign with more than fifty civil society organizations an open letter to the Ministers of the Environment of Mediterranean countries.

Here are the main extracts from this open letter:

“While negotiations on the global treaty against plastic pollution are at a standstill, we are calling for a collective start and an ambitious regional action plan that:

  • officially recognizes the environmental emergency in the face of this pollution ;
  • supports the global treaty with commitment to sign and ratify it;
  • commits to reducing the production of virgin plastics and taking into account health risks and exposure to chemicals of concern;
  • transparently accounts for the flow of plastics dumped in the Mediterranean;
  • creates a Mediterranean fund for vulnerable countries to strengthen research and waste treatment;
  • integrates the fight against pollution into all sectoral public policies”.
    Note that Tunisia was represented at these meetings by parliamentarian Riadh Jaidane, deputy for Tunisians abroad.
