Macron threatens Israel with sanctions

On an official visit to Asia, the French president Emmanuel Macron raised the tone this Friday, May 30 with regard to Israel, calling for a firm reaction of the European Union if no humanitarian opening “at the height of the situation” was quickly implemented in the Gaza Strip.

From Singapore, where he had a press conference, the Head of State said: “We must harden our collective position if there is no appropriate response in the coming hours or the next few days. He said it could result in the suspension of certain components of the association agreement between the European Union and Israel, an agreement which notably supposes respect for human rights. “This is not the case today,” he said, evoking the possibility of European sanctions.

These statements come as the humanitarian situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate. For Emmanuel Macron, the time has come to switch to increased pressure on the Israeli government: “I still have the hope that the government of Israel will inflect its position and that a humanitarian response will be provided. But if this is not the case, we must apply our rules. »»

In addition to this warning, the French president has reaffirmed his commitment to the two -state solution. Without formally committing to an imminent recognition of a Palestinian state by France, he stressed that this option was no longer a simple ideal, but “a political requirement”.
