Macron stuck in New York by Trump’s procession: when diplomacy is played in the street

Monday September 22, 2025, Emmanuel Macron experienced an unusual scene in New York. After having made a historic speech to the UN to officially recognize the state of Palestine, the French president found himself blocked by the police … Due to the passage of the presidential procession of Donald Trump.

At the end of the United Nations headquarters, Emmanuel Macron thought of joining the French Embassy directly. But the street was closed: the police had stopped all traffic to let Donald Trump’s caravan pass. On a video broadcast by the gross media, we see the French head of state interacting with a police officer who prohibits him the passage. Telephone in hand, Macron then calls his American counterpart: “Guess what?” I’m waiting in the street because everything is blocked for you, ”he said, mid-amused, half-deputy.

An unexpected meeting with New York reality

Even after the processing of the procession, the French president had to continue his way … on foot, traveling almost thirty minutes in the streets of Manhattan. Unexpected opportunity: he took photos with passers -by, received a kiss on the front of an admirer, and continued his conversation with Trump.

This impromptu exchange illustrates the proximity maintained between the two leaders. According to the Élysée, Emmanuel Macron and Donald Trump are called “almost every day” on their personal mobile phones. A relationship made of mutual respect despite assumed differences. “I know his character, he knows mine. He has his ideas, I have mine, but we respect ourselves, ”said Macron last February.

The incident occurs following a major speech: the French president has formalized the recognition by France of a Palestinian state, against the backdrop of war in Gaza and a UN report accusing Israel of genocide. A solemn declaration, immediately followed by an almost burlesque counter time in New York streets.
