A 26 -year -old Syrian, in connection with the attack with the deadly knife in Solingen in Germany, was arrested this Sunday, August 25, 2024. The suspect, who went to the authorities after a day of hunt, recognized his responsibility in fact, according to local police. The attack caused the death of three people and injured eight others, including four seriously.
The attack occurred on August 23, 2024, during a party organized for the 650th anniversary of Solingen, attracting a large crowd. The victims are two men aged 56 and 67 as well as a 56 -year -old woman. The first elements of the investigation indicate that the victims were targeted on the neck, as confirmed by the police.
The Islamic State (IS) organization claimed the attack, claiming that the assailant was one of his members acting to avenge Muslims. The group broadcast this claim via its propaganda organ, Amaq.
The federal anti -terrorist prosecution has taken care of the investigation, opening a file for “participation in a terrorist organization”. Two other individuals had been arrested before: a 15-year-old adolescent suspected of non-denunciation and a man arrested in a center for refugees from Solingen, considered a witness.
The German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser expressed her shock and called to national unity in the face of this “horrible attack”. She also denounced attempts to sow hatred. Chancellor Olaf Scholz demanded that the culprit be severely punished, highlighting his emotion in the face of the attack.
The festivities provided for in Solingen were canceled following the incident. The event, which was to celebrate the cultural diversity of the city, had attracted up to 75,000 visitors. The authorities continue to seek the weapon of crime and examine the evidence collected at the scene.
