Kais Saied reiterates Tunisia’s commitment

The five Maghreb countries such as Mauritania, Morocco, Algeria, Libya and Tunisia, commemorate, this Wednesday, February 17, 2021, the 32nd anniversary of the Arab Maghreb Union Foundation, an economic and political organization formed by these five countries, on February 17, 1989.

On this occasion, the President of the Republic, Kais Saied, sent messages of congratulations to his Maghreb counterparts, “bringing together the peoples of the region in terms of fraternal relations, solidarity and unity of destiny,” said a press release from the Presidency of the Republic.

The Head of State recalled “the growing and diversified challenges faced by the Maghreb countries which require continuous efforts to advance joint action and promote integration” and reiterated the unwavering commitment of Tunisia in favor of UMA as a strategic option, and its firm conviction of the need to further support the pillars of this vital space … “.

UMA was born on February 17, 1989 when the Royal Palace of Marrakech was signed by the five heads of state, the constitutive treaty of this union, from the meeting of June 10, 1988 in Zéralda which had prepared it.

Its secretary general is currently Taïeb Baccouche, former Tunisian foreign minister, in office since 2016. His predecessor was also Tunisian in the person of Habib Ben Yahia, who held this post from 2006 to 2016.
