The air strikes led by Israel during the night of June 12 to 13 on several military and nuclear sites in Iran have aroused a wave of convictions around the world. If the Hebrew state openly assumes the operation – baptized Rising lion -, his diplomatic repercussions already promise to be major.
Saudi Arabia, the first regional actor to reactdenounced, Friday, June 13, “a blatant violation of international law”. In a statement released by his Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Riyadh condemned “odious attacks” and called on the UN Security Council to “assume its responsibilities to immediately stop this attack”.
Reprobation in the Gulf and beyond
Oman, host country of informal talks between Washington and Tehran, expressed a similar conviction, deploring a “escalation likely to ignite the whole region”. Qatar and Kuwait also expressed their concern, calling for respect for Iranian sovereignty and de -escalation.
In Asia, Indonesia expressed his concern in the face of “major risks for regional and global stability”. THE Japan urged all parties to “restraint” and to favor “the diplomatic way”, while China warned against “a drift towards an open conflict”.
On the western side, the reactions remained more nuanced. THE United Kingdom Said “concerned about climbing” while reaffirming the right of Israel to defend itself. L’European Union called to “avoid any act likely to further compromise regional stability”, without directly condemning the Israeli operation.
A strategic precedent
According to several analysts, this attack marks a turning point in the Israeli-Iranian confrontation. “The level of coordination, the simultaneity of the strikes on Natanz, Ispahan, Tabriz, Tehran and Khorramabad show a advanced military planning,” notes a European diplomat. Unlike the exchanges of 2024 – response limited after the attack on the Iranian Embassy in Damascus and the assassination of General Abbas Nilforoushan -, this operation seems to aim to degrade Iranian strategic capacities.
L’UNby the voice of secretary general António Guterres, expressed his “great concern” in the face of what he calls “dangerous military climbing”, calling all the parties to restraint. Emergency consultations could be summoned to the Security Council in the coming hours.
A risk of regional conflagration
In Tehran, the Iranian authorities denounced a “brutal assault” and promised a “decisive response”. Several Iranian officials have mentioned the possibility of attacking American interests in the region, although Washington has assured that he had not been informed of Israeli strikes.
The United States, while recalling its commitment to the security of Israel, ordered the partial evacuation of several embassies and military bases in Iraq and in the Gulf. The Pentagon indicated that it has placed its strengths on a reinforced alert.
