The Israeli army has announced that it had made a “precision strike” in the southern suburbs of Beirut, targeting a Hezbollah commander. This operation would be a response to an attack that occurred on Saturday in the Golan occupied by Israel, which cost the lives of 12 children and adolescents.
According to several sources, the target is Muhhin Shukr, a Hezbollah commander. The attack took place, today at 7:40 pm, in the Haret Hreik district, considered a bastion of Hezbollah. According to the Lebanese National Information Agency, at least one person has been killed and several others injured.
The strike hit a residential building near a hospital, partially destroying the targeted building. The hospital has undergone minor damage, while the surrounding streets are strewn with debris and broken glass.
This is the first attack in the vicinity of Beirut since January, when an air strike had killed Saleh Arouri, a senior Hamas official. The latter attack was the first in Beirut since the 34 -day war between Israel and Hezbollah in the summer of 2006.
Despite the climbing of tensions, the White House does not believe that a war between Hezbollah and Israel is inevitable, according to spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre. Hezbollah, on the other hand, denies all responsibility in the July 27 attack against Majdal Shams in the occupied Golan.
The situation remains tense in the region, and the international community closely monitors the evolution of the conflict.
