Iran announced on Friday that it considered the ongoing negotiations with the United States on its nuclear program as “meaningless”, following massive Israeli strikes on its territory.
Tehran accuses Washington of having tacitly supported this offensive, thus jeopardizing the diplomatic process.
“The American part has emptied the dialogue of its content. One cannot claim to want to negotiate while allowing Israel to target Iranian territory, “said the spokesman for the Iranian Foreign Affairs, Esmaeil Baghaei, quoted by the semi-official agency Tasnim.
Baghaei said that the Israeli strikes, described as “Zionist attack”, would not have taken place without the approval of the United States. He also accused Israel of having influenced the current diplomatic process, thus undergoing the prospects of regulations by means of dialogue.
Washington, for its part, denies any involvement in Israeli strikes and recalled before the United Nations Security Council that it would be “in the interest of Iran” to continue the talks on nuclear.
A sixth cycle of negotiations, scheduled for this Sunday in Oman between the two countries, is now uncertain in this climate of increasing tensions. No official postponement has been announced, but the Iranian position suggests a possible suspension of the discussions.
