The recent words of Benjamin Netanyahu claiming his “attachment” to the vision of a “great Israel” have sparked a wave of indignation in the Arab world. In an interview with the i24 channel, the Israeli Prime Minister presented this project as a “historical and spiritual mission” for the Jewish people.
There Arab League denounced “blatant violations of the sovereignty of the Arab states” and a “serious threat to regional security”. There Jordan spoke of a “dangerous provocation” and theEgypt demanded clarifications.
THE QatarL’Saudi ArabiaOman and thePalestinian authority also firmly condemned these declarations, qualifying them as expansionists and contrary to international law.
These reactions occur in a context of extreme tensions: the Israeli offensive on Gaza has lasted for almost two years, causing more than 61,000 Palestinian deaths and aggravating a major humanitarian crisis. For many observers, Netanyahu’s words are likely to further weaken the timid standardization efforts between Israel and certain Arab countries.
Faced with this lifting of shields, several Arab capitals call on the international community to reaffirm respect for the recognized borders and the rights of the Palestinian people, considering that any expansionist hint will only feed instability in the Middle East.
