Gaza: 1,872 Palestinian prisoners released as part of second wave of exchanges

Israeli occupying forces released 1,872 Palestinian prisoners on Monday, as part of the second wave of releases provided for by the ceasefire agreement signed on October 9.

Thirty-eight buses and ten ambulances transported the former detainees from the Ketziot (Negev) detention center to the Gaza Strip, where they were greeted in an emotional scene at the Nasser medical complex in Khan Yunis. Several released people immediately received medical care before being reunited with their loved ones.

This second wave includes 154 prisoners sentenced to heavy sentences or life imprisonment, transferred to Egypt, as well as 1,718 detainees from Gaza, arrested after October 7, 2023.

Earlier in the day, a first wave of 96 prisoners, including several sentenced to life, was released from the Ofer penitentiary center to Ramallah, as part of the same agreement.

This ceasefire agreement, announced by American President Donald Trump, provides in particular for the end of the war against Gaza, the withdrawal of Israeli troops, the massive entry of humanitarian aid and the exchange of prisoners between the two parties.

According to organizations defending Palestinian detainees, more than 11,000 people still remain incarcerated in Israeli prisons, often in inhumane conditions marked by torture, deprivation and medical neglect.

Since October 7, 2023, the aggression against Gaza has left 67,869 martyrs and more than 170,000 injured, mainly women and children. The famine caused by the siege also caused the deaths of 463 civilians, including 157 children.
