French president Emmanuel Macron has just appointed François Bayrou Prime Minister, announces the Élysée. An appointment which comes almost ten days after the fall of the government of Michel Barnier.
François Bayrou is a French politician born May 25, 1951 in Bordères, in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques. It is a central figure in French political life, known for its longevity and centrist positioning.
Bayrou began his career in politics by engaging in the reforming movement, a centrist party. He became a member of the Union for French Democracy (UDF), founded by Valéry Giscard d’Estaing, where he plays an important role.
His political ascent culminates when he became Minister of National Education between 1993 and 1997. During his mandate, he undertook significant, although controversial reforms, in particular on the financing of private schools.
In 2017, François Bayrou played a key role in the election of Emmanuel Macron by supporting him. This support marks a strategic turning point, sealing an alliance between the MoDem and the Republic En Marche. In 2020, he was appointed high-commissioner, a function intended to reflect on the strategic guidelines of France over the long term.
