French president Emmanuel Macron announced, Sunday, June 9, 2024, having made the decision to dissolve the National Assembly and to convene legislative elections on June 30 and July 7. A decision dictated by the victory of the national rally in the European elections.
After the victory of the national rally in the European elections, with 31.5% of the votes, President Emmanuel Macron announced the dissolution of the National Assembly and the holding of anticipated legislative elections on June 30 and July 7.
“I will therefore not know, at the end of this day, to do as if nothing had happened to this situation … This is why, after having carried out the consultations provided for in the article twelve of our Constitution, I decided to give you back the choice of our parliamentary future by vote,” said Macron during a speech, deploring the good results of the extreme right in Europe and in France.
This decision to dissolve the National Assembly was announced after the announcement of the preliminary results of the European elections where the national rally came first.
The European elections of 2024 were, in fact, marked by an increase in the far right in several countries of the European Union. In France, the national rally of Jordan Bardella has largely won the ballot with more than 31.5% of the votes, largely ahead of Emmanuel Macron’s Renaissance party.
It is the sixth time that a president has dissolved the National Assembly in the history of the Fifth Republic, twice under Charles de Gaulle (1962 and 1968), twice under François Mitterrand (1981 and 1988) and once a sub -under -mockery (1997).
