The mayor of Derna, Abdulmonem al-Ghaithi, who had been removed from his duties was arrested, as well as seven people working in the management of the dams that broke up.

The Attorney General of Libya has, in fact, ordered the placement in pre -trial detention of eight officials as part of an investigation into the rupture of the two dams which led to the deadly floods of Derna on September 10.

Among the eight people whose prosecutor ordered the placement in pre -trial detention for “negligence”, appear seven occupying people or having held positions of responsibility within the Department of Hydraulic Resources or that of the management of dams in Libya.

According to the investigation ordered on September 15 by the Attorney General on the circumstances of the drama, the Department of the Dams in Libya had reported cracks on the two works in 1998 but no work was done to remedy it.

The Daniel storm struck on the night of September 10 to 11, the east of Libya, notably Derna, a city of 100,000 inhabitants, causing the rupture of two dams upstream and causing a flood of the magnitude of a tsunami which won everything in its path.

According to the latest provisional official assessment, the floods left at least 3868 dead, while thousands of other people are still missing.
