This world premiere had been presented as a major surgical advance when surgeons had managed to graft on a 57 -year -old patient, the heart of a genetically modified pork.
But now, this patient died on Tuesday March 9, 2022 at the University of Maryland (UMMC), two months after the operation.
His state of health had started to deteriorate a few days ago, the hospital said in a statement adding that he had received palliative care once it was sentenced.
The transplant of the heart of a genetically modified pig produced on January 7 was a first global surgical and before receiving the transplant, this patient had been fully informed of the risks linked to this method and of the fact that it was experimental.
After the operation, the grafted heart behaved “very well for several weeks without presenting any sign of rejection,” said the hospital.
