The number of deaths among Hajj pilgrims reached 1081, according to a count established by AFP to the authorities of the countries concerned and diplomats; An assessment that increased after being established at 577 deaths.
This new assessment established by AFP reports 58 additional deaths recorded among Egyptian pilgrims, which brings to at least 658 the number of Egyptians who died mostly succumbing to heat -related discomfort, and 630 of which had no pilgrimage permits as noted by an AFP diplomat under the cover of anonymity.
According to the figures provided by a dozen countries through official declarations or diplomats participating in the search for victims, the number of deaths also includes 183 Indonesians, 68 Indians, 60 Jordanians, 35 Tunisians, 13 people from Iraqi Kurdistan, 11 Iranians, 3 Senegalese, 35 Pakistanis, 14 Malaysians and a Sudanese.
Last year, at least 240 pilgrims, mostly Indonesian, died during the pilgrimage. The Hajj attracts between 2 and 3 million faithful each year to Mecca, including 1.6 million from abroad.
A significant number of tens of thousands of unregistered pilgrims, allegedly aggravated the situation, especially in the Egyptian camps saturated and deprived of water, food and air conditioning.
