A cyber attack targeting a provider of registration and boarding systems caused major disruption on Saturday, September 20, in several major European airports. Brussels, Berlin and London-Heathrow reported delays and cancellations, while tens of thousands of passengers were expected.
Paralyzed systems and a return to the manual
According to Brussels Airport, the attack made automated systems ineffective, forcing the teams to resort to manual procedures. “This situation has a significant impact on the flight program,” the operator said in a statement, adding that several delays and cancellations were inevitable.
Brussels on the front line
At least nine flights were canceled in the Belgian capital, where around 35,000 passengers were expected during the day, according to RTBF. Berlin and London-Heathrow report similar difficulties with significantly slowed recordings.
Heathrow’s London Airport had already experienced a major breakdown last March, linked to a fire in an electric post, which had had a global impact. This new cyber attack highlights the persistent vulnerability of air infrastructure in the face of digital threats.
