The caricature in question highlights Recep Tayyip Erdogan in briefs, beer in hand, which raises the dress of a veiled woman.
Indeed, the Turkish presidency condemned Wednesday with “the greatest firmness” this “abjective caricature”, which, according to her, reflects “hostility against the Turks and Islam”.
This caricature intervenes in an already tense context between the two presidents. Recep Tayyip Erdogan had recently criticized what he called the attitude of his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron towards Muslims.
“All that can be said of a head of state who deals with millions of members of different religious communities in this way is: first do mental health exams,” he said.
For its part, the Elysée denounced words deemed “unacceptable”. “Excessive and rudeness are not a method. We demand from Erdogan that he changes the course of his policy because it is dangerous in every way. We do not enter unnecessary controversies and do not accept insults, ”commented the Elysée.
