The man suspected of having killed two Swedes in an attack on Monday evening in Brussels was arrested on Tuesday morning in Brussels, according to a spokesperson for the Belgian federal prosecutor’s office.

The arrest of the individual, who is not yet formally identified, took place in the Brussels commune of Schaerbeek, where a building had been searched in the night.

“The police opened fire,” said this spokesman Eric Van Duyse, without specifying if the suspect was injured. It must still be formally identified.

The radicalized man of Tunisian origin, suspected of having killed two Swedish nationals in the middle of the street in Brussels, was still actively sought in Belgium.

According to the Minister of Justice, Vincent Van Quickenborne, this asylum seeker was sentenced to Tunisia “for common law offenses”, but was not reported for a terrorist risk.

An individual would have opened fire yesterday shortly after 7 p.m. in the Belgian capital. Two people lost their lives, and another was injured.

According to a video posted on social networks, whose authenticity was confirmed by the Belgian authorities, the shooter claimed the attack, according to his accent, he would be Tunisian.

The shooter posted a video on the social networks in which he affirms, in front of the camera, in Arabic with the Tunisian accent, that he claims to be of the Islamic State (Daesh) and which “lives and dies for his religion”.

In the video, he presents himself as “Mohamed Abdessalam Meftah Lassoued”, a name also of Tunisian origin.
