Unsurprisingly, Bashar al-Assad was re-elected yesterday Thursday, May 27, president of Syria for a fourth term during a ballot held in the regions under government control.
The president of the Parliament, Hammoud Sabbagha, announced that Assad had been re -elected with 95.1 % of the votes. According to him, 14.2 million people participated in the election, out of the 18.1 million called to vote.
According to AFP, in Damascus, thousands of supporters of Bashar al-Assad gathered on the Place des Omeyyads, waving Syrian flags and portraits of the president, chanting slogans to his glory and dancing.
Western countries and the European Union judge that the election was “neither free nor just”. “Your opinions are worth nothing,” replied Assad this week.
