ISIS fighters targeted an army bus on Thursday evening in the desert, in the province of Deir Ezzor, killing at least twenty-three soldiers, and injuring ten.
According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (OSDH), dozens of other soldiers were missing after the attack.
According to the director of the OSDH, Rami Abdel Rahmane, questioned by the France-Presse agency, “IS recently intensified his attacks (…) in a message aimed at ensuring that the group is still present and active despite the death of its leaders”.
This is the third Islamic State attack on the Syrian army since the beginning of August.
Last Monday ten soldiers were killed in Rakka province, and on August 1, including five Syrian soldiers, had perished during an attack on an attack on a convoy of tanker trucks carrying fuel in a desert area in central Syria.
