At least 32 people were killed and many others injured in a suicide bombing and an armed attack on a popular beach in Mogadishu, the Somali capital, according to the authorities.
More than 60 people were also injured, some seriously, during an attack on a popular seaside resort frequented by Somalians on weekends.
Al-Shabab, an armed group linked to Al-Qaeda, claimed responsibility for the attack on the Lido beach Friday evening via an affiliated radio station.
A witness told the Associated Press news agency during a phone call, having seen an attacker with an explosive vest for a few moments before the man “is exploded next to the hotel with a view of the beach”. Mohamud Moalim also said that some of his friends who were with him at the hotel were killed and others injured.
Lido beach, a popular district of Mogadishu, is very lively on Friday evening, while Somalians take advantage of their weekend. The district has already been targeted by Al-Shabab fighters.
