A provisional government responsible for leading Libya to elections in December was elected this Friday, February 5, 2021, as part of the inter-Libyan dialogue organized this week under the aegis of the United Nations in Geneva.

The participants in the forum elected Mohamed al-Menfi at the head of the presidential council and Abdoulhamid Dbeibeh as Prime Minister.

Their list won with 39 votes against 34 for their rivals, however given favorites, Aguila Saleh, chief of parliament based in the east, and Fathi Bachagha, Minister of the Interior of the Government established in Tripoli.

The election of this interim government follows the Libyan political dialogue forum which was held in November in Tunis and which was focused on the organization of national elections on December 24, 2021.

Participants in the forum had initially granted themselves on the organization of national elections, but the United Nations actual emissary, Stéphanie Williams had deplored the suspension of talks without any government being appointed to supervise these elections and without any agreement about them.

Yesterday, Stéphanie Williams welcomed the election of this interim government. “On behalf of the United Nations, I am happy to attend this historic moment,” she said. “You have overcome your differences, the divisions and the many challenges you have faced,” she added.

All the candidates of these temporary bodies have undertaken not to run for the presidency or a seat of deputy during the elections of December 24, and to appoint 30% of women in key positions of the government.
