At least 33,179 people died in the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that hit Turkey and Syria on February 6. But this new assessment, announced yesterday, could still “double” according to the UN.
Seven days after the drama, the emergency services continue to activate in order to find possible survivors in the terrible earthquake of February 6.
A week after the disaster, survivors were removed from the rubble, such as little Halit Ali Talha, two months old, remained blocked 128 hours and found in the arms of his deceased mother, according to local media.
In addition, the United Nations warned that at least 870,000 people needed hot meals in Türkiye and Syria in an emergency. Up to 5.3 million would currently be without roof just in Syria.
The counting of the dead will “double or more,” alerted the head of the UN humanitarian agency on Saturday, Martin Griffiths. The latter went to Türkiye on Saturday in the city of Kahramanmaras, epicenter of the earthquake.
“I think it is difficult to estimate (the balance sheet) precisely because we have to go under the rubble (…). We have not really started to count the number of deaths yet, “he told Sky News.
